Running Springs is truly a mecca in the hustle and bustle of Southern California! The Running Springs area offers small-town living yet is only 20 minutes from San Bernardino, 40 minutes from Riverside, and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Orange County. The area is a refreshing mix of small A-frames and large full-time homes throughout the forested mountain. It has the most full-time residents due to its easy access to “down the hill.” The biggest draw to the Running Springs area is our small-town life, a place to bring your family and offer them a peek at how life used to be.

1. **Location:**
Running Springs is a cozy town of 5,000 people situated at an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet (1,829 meters) above sea level. It is part of the larger San Bernardino Mountains region, known for its scenic beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities.

2. **Early Settlement:**
The area was initially settled in the late 19th century, primarily as a result of the Gold Rush in nearby areas. Lumber and mining activities played a significant role in the early development of the community.

3. **Development as a Resort Area:**
Running Springs developed into a popular mountain resort destination in the early 20th century. The fresh mountain air and proximity to outdoor activities attracted visitors seeking a retreat from the urban areas below.

4. **Snow Valley Ski Resort:**
The nearby Snow Valley Ski Resort, located just a few miles from Running Springs, has been a key attraction since it opened in 1924. It is one of the oldest continuously operating ski resorts in Southern California.

Students in Running Springs attend class in the Rim of the World Unified School District. Elementary school students can attend class at Charles Hoffman Elementary or the 1-12 private school The Shepherds Flock Academy. The Shepherds Flock Academy is the only middle school in Running Springs (CEDU Middle School closed in 2005). Still, there are multiple choices for public education in nearby Highland and Lake Arrowhead. The same is true for high school; students must travel at least as far as Highland or Lake Arrowhead for public education. San Bernardino also has good schools, about a half-hour drive away. For higher education, there are several institutions in San Bernardino, including San Bernardino Valley College, CSU San Bernardino, ITT Technical Institute, Loma Linda University, and California Baptist College. There are also plenty more schools the further west you head.
